New Campaign for Pacific General
By
Seii Taisho Gun

FORWARD:
After centuries of foreign domination and internal strife a general has risen from the ashes to bring China to the brink of regional domination. After driving the Japanese from Mainland China and defeating Mao's communists you have been given a mandate to secure all of China's lost territory as well as remove all foreign forces from the Asian mainland. Close economic and military ties with the United States have allowed you to pursue a plan of forming a naval arm, which will be needed to secure all Chinese territory as well as exert its influence in the region. Certain US equipment will become available but the types will be limited to what the US president can get passed in Congress. Your resources are limited and you will need to use them wisely in order to succeed where so many have failed.

INTRODUCTION:
This archive contains the files needed to install the campaign called "Chinese Dragon". The campaign was designed using Bill Haering's Campaign Editor Program and Map Editor, Fred Chandla's PacMap Editor and Campaign Briefing Editor, and Steve Strayers Armory Equipment roster files. In order to use China as a major power it was necessary to modify the Armory Equipment file. I added certain units to the Chinese for player purchase. All added units are selected as "No AI Buy" so even if you forget to reinstall the original equipment file or the equipment file you are using after you finish this campaign it will not change have an affect on other campaigns you may play. In any case you must use this equipment file in order to play and win. The old equipment file will not have added units and you will lose with it!

OVERVIEW:
This campaign uses China as the major player. You will encounter various nations as you seek to gain back territory that was taken over by foreign powers and you will then expand your influence on the Asian mainland.

This 10-scenario campaign will test your abilities as a general and a strategist. I have combined a lot of land/naval scenarios so it's a well-rounded campaign no matter which type of battle you prefer. I have intentionally made this campaign difficult. You will need to use your prestige wisely as it is given sparingly at times to reflect the fact that China has not yet reached her potential as a major power. Your air forces and sea power will play a key role in securing Decisive Victories.

The campaign starts in 1937, and ends in 1945 at Korea.

BACKUP:
Installation of this campaign overwrites files in the scen and data directories of Pacific General. Please be sure to back up these directories BEFORE installing these files.
The txt.pfp and pfpdata.idx files change the between-scenarios briefings as well as the text when you lose or win the campaign in order to match this campaign and can cause some games to crash. I personally have not had any trouble using these but others have reported that to me. Should you experience a game crash try reinstalling the original files (because you backed them up by copying them to a temp directory right!).

INSTALLATION:
To install the campaign, the archive "Chinese Dragon.zip" should be extracted into the Pacific General Scen and data directory as follows.
Place the following 4 files in the data directory of Pacific General:
pacequip.eqp
pacequip.txt
pfpdata.idx
txt.pfp

As noted before the pfpdata.idx txt.pfp files will change the between scenario briefings and are needed to provide you with important information of your upcoming assignment as well as view your ascension in the IJA ranks. The pacequip.eqp and pacequip.txt files are the equipment roster.

Place all the remaining .scn .txt .des .tit files into the Scen directory of Pacific General.

You should also install the Fix Snow patch found on Steve Strayers PacGen Armory Web Site at http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/sgt_stryker/armory.htm

IMPORTANT:
There is a bug in v1.1 of Pacific General that cannot be fixed by this (or any other) campaign or 3rd-party patch. The specific bug is that when playing ANY campaign game, when you've finished one scenario and are ready to move on to the next scenario in the campaign, the game will ask you if you wish to save at this time... DO NOT SAVE WHEN IT ASKS YOU THIS!!! Saving at this point in the game (especially if you EVER reload this saved game), gives you essentially double the prestige you are intended to receive in the campaign. In theory you can continually reload the game and obtain in infinite amount of prestige before resuming the next scenario in the campaign.

This campaign is intended to be a challenging campaign without using any type of "cheats"... this undocumented feature however, may sneak up on unsuspecting people who are looking for a challenge without handouts, and so this is why I bring this bug up.

If you wish to play the this campaign as it is intended to be played, and wish to be challenged with the amount of prestige the author of the campaign supposed it to be, please follow these save-game tips:
1) NEVER save the game when it asks you to save between scenarios!
2) If you do not wish to deploy immediately when ending a scenario, please remember to save your game right before you take that last objective hex in a given scenario... this way you can pick up the game later, and go straight through the deployment screen
3) Simply play straight from one scenario, through the deployment screen and into the next scenario without saving. If you save AFTER the deployment screen at the beginning of the 1st turn of the next scenario, this is a safe way to save a game for later.
*This section was copied directly from Steve Strayers Z-Plan Readme file and credit should be given to Steve for this fine explanation of the prestige bug.

NOTES:
It is recommended that music be turned off while playing. In this case once the main screen of Pacific General comes up, the CDROM can be removed from the drive. This will eliminate the inappropriate Japanese narration between scenarios.

ACKNOWLEDGEMNETS:
As noted above I wish to thank Bill Haering and Fred Chandla for the Map Editors and map tools they have provided. I especially wish to thank Steve Strayer for his guidance and patience in answering many of my emails. Three years ago I played Z-Plan and that rekindled my interest in Pacific General. I decided that I wanted to contribute to the game as well and began making my own campaign. I quickly shelved it though when I realized how much work was involved and due to other commitments but began work on it again this year. Steve advised me to check out the PacGen forum, which I did, and have found this to be a great source for information and topics shared by fellow WWII history buffs and gamers. I would like to thank these folks for their input to posted questions on the forum. I hope the PacGen community will grow and others will make campaigns so the interest will continue. My first campaign was "USSR under the Rising Sun" which can be found on Steves Armory website listed below.

New scenarios and campaigns (plus many other add-ons) can be found on the web at the Pacific General Armory... the site's address is:
